Message from the Principal
Dear Parents:
This will be the last newsletter for the school year 2009-2010. At this time I want to express my sincere thanks to all the parents and caregivers for your help during the year. At the end of a school year, I reflect on how well have the students achieved. I can say that when parents, teachers and students work together great things happen. We need only to look at the exchange trip this year as an example of great partners and leadership to see how well students meet challenges. E-learning has also shown us that students can do well when they have the opportunity to take advanced courses. It requires all partners to be working together.
Many of our courses are changing to reflect the new reality of the job market and as such ELA, Math, Social Studies, Science are being emphasized right from K- 12. We need to help students be in school as often as they can so there will be no gaps in their learning. We are reaching the point where students know that good grades and attendance are important if he/she wants to reach his/her goals.
I want to thank the staff of Moose Kerr School. They have worked very hard for the betterment of your child. Many hours that often cannot be seen are used to plan and help your child succeed. You as parents need to celebrate the gift of having a great group of people watching over your child’s education. I am proud to work with each and every one of these individuals. Some will be moving on but the majority of our staff will be here in September; that means continuity for the students and parents. The staff looks forward to serving you in the fall.
Finally, I take this time to thank the DEA for having faith in me to be the principal for this year while Velma was on Sabbatical. The Aklavik DEA, past and present, has been an exceptional group to work with. They spend much time working to make your school a great place to be. I have been honored to work with each of the members and I wish them well in the upcoming year.
I wish each of you a safe, relaxing and fun filled summer.
Mahsi Cho, Quyannini, Thank you!
Frank

The trip to Ottawa was a great success.
The students represented Aklavik very well, and had a great time. Many of the parents in Ottawa even commented that they would like to keep their “twins” as they were so helpful and thoughtful!
Students toured parliament, checked out two colleges, hung out with their “twins” and friends, and generally enjoyed being in the city. Come out and see some photos of our trip on May 31st at the AGM

Safe Arrivals: Ruth Stewart
This program is about what happens between your home and the school.
We are working to ensure that all students arrive at school safely. When a student is not here, we want to be sure that both the parent and the school are aware of where they are. It is very important to phone the school if your child is not going to be at school. If you call in, there is no need for Ruth to call you!
Safe Arrivals works when we work in partnership. It shows our students that we are concerned about them, and encourages attendance. Parents: thank you for your continued support of this program

Down on the Farm
Students have spent time caring for their plants. Some of our plants are getting quite large and we have had to transplant them into larger pots. We are growing vegetables and some flowers. It has been a great lesson for the students in nurturing their plants along.
RAZ Rocket Reading
Students continue to make great strides in our RAZKIDS reading program. We have awarded another 4 certificates for students who have completed all the books in their reading level.
Great work Mathias, Angelina, Keegan, Kennedi, Madison, and Tyler S . These students have or are about to complete all of the books in their assigned reading level and about to move up! As students complete books complete books in their reading level they move up the ranks from ensign to junior lieutenant, captain and so on.
Please encourage you son/daughter to complete the books in their level and have them record themselves reading using the record tool. This will greatly improve their reading fluency.
Great News!!!
We have recently purchased a second RAZ Kids subscription for the school so more students in grades K and up can enjoy the benefits and fun offered by this program.
This summer, the school that reads the most Raz-Kids books will win a school-wide pizza party, courtesy of Learning A-Z!*
Dream box math awards have been handed out to several students in class for completion of their adventure in the Dream box. So far our class has produced 11 tables, two more in the making and several more on order. The sales of these tables will go back into the shop to buy more material for next year and hopefully create some new products that our community will enjoy.
